Volunteers are utilized during our normal business hours and occasionally during hours when the Library is closed. Some volunteer positions require an ongoing commitment, while others are one-time activities or on-call positions. Volunteers perform services without compensations or expectation of compensation.

What Types of Volunteer Opportunities Are Available?

Administrative Volunteers – The Library of Virginia needs assistance with numerous administrative duties and projects in all departments and divisions. Enthusiastic volunteers who have a willingness to learn and an unquenchable intellectual curiosity are always needed. The best candidates will have strong computer skills, experience with administrative support, and a willingness to work on a variety of assignments, which could include data entry, answering phones, filing, and more.

Library Development & Networking Volunteers – The Library of Virginia serves all public libraries in Virginia through the Library Development & Networking department. Some examples of projects where help may be needed are:

How Do You Apply?

Applicants must first submit an online volunteer application. All applications are reviewed, and if an appropriate placement is found, applicants will be contacted to schedule an interview. Selected applicants will be required to successfully complete a criminal background check prior to being accepted.
