Accession Number: 37484
Creator: Auditor of Public Accounts
Genre: manuscript volume
Date: 1894-1898
Description: The Board on the Chesapeake and Its Tributaries was created by an act of the General Assembly passed on 4 March 1884. The Board was composed of the Governor, Auditor of Public Accounts and the Treasurer. On 29 February 1892 the General Assembly authorized the Board to cooperate with the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey in surveying the natural oyster beds, rocks, and shoals of Virginia. James B. Baylor was in charge of the survey. The board ceased to exist after the General Assembly transferred its functions to the newly created Board of Fisheries by an act passed 7 February 1898. Copies of outgoing letters written mainly by the secretary for the Board on the Chesapeake Bay and its Tributaries comprise this letterpress book. The letters were sent to ship captains and others involved in surveying Virginia’s oyster beds, including James Baylor.
Restoration Needs: The pages are fragile tissue paper that are fractured so they need to be mended and repaired on the edges. The remnants of the front pages will be encapsulated in mylar to retain them with the volume. The volume is not stable - the boards are warped and not attached. The volume will be rebound and receive a new cloth binding.
Estimated Restoration Cost: $550
