Virginia Family Literacy Calendar
The Library of Virginia is delighted to offer the Virginia Day by Day Family Literacy Calendar. Here you and your child can embark on an adventure together through books and reading and the many fun-filled activities that spring from them. This calendar will help you identify events and activities that support early learning and ensure that your child is ready for school and ready to read independently.
The Virginia Family Literacy Calendar logo may be used in a variety of ways: on Web sites, multimedia materials, annual reports, newsletters, posters, news releases and press kits, educational materials, signage, banners, invitations to events, and even on your stationery.

Every Child Ready to Read® is an initiative of the Associations for Library Services to Children and the Public Library Associations, divisions of the American Library Association.
Early Literacy Training
Children develop much of their capacity for learning before entering kindergarten. The first years are critical times and children entering school with pre-reading skills have the advantage. Early Literacy is defined as everything a child learns and knows about reading and writing before he or she reads and writes. Creating a library staff knowledgeable about Early Literacy and ready to help parents and caring adults prepare children ready for school and learning is a goal of the Library of Virginia.
We provide training to library staff and interested professionals.

Saroj Ghoting
is an Early Childhood Literacy Consultant and national trainer on early literacy. She is a co-author of
Storytimes for Everyone! Developing Young Children’s Language and Literacy and The Early Literacy Kit: a Handbook and Tip Cards, which offers information
on the school readiness domains to convey to parents and caregivers in a storytime setting. Saroj Ghoting also teaches two online courses for the Library of Virginia. Early Literacy and Books: Making the Connections and
Enhanced Storytimes. During the development of Enhanced Storytimes, Pierre Courtois, with the assistance of Enid Costley, produced several training tapes
that are listed below. We encourage you to use these tapes for group or personal training.
In an enhanced storytime,
librarians provide parents with little nuggets of early literacy information. Ideally, we define the early literacy skill, model the early literacy skill and provide parents with an activity
they may do with their child. Another way to say this is we Explain the early literacy tip, provide an Example and Empower adults.

Early Literacy Activity Center
Play is a fun way for children to develop their language and pre-reading skills. To encourage safe, fun and educational places for children and adults, the Library of Virginia has placed in over 100 public libraries Early Literacy Activity Centers. These Early Literacy Activity Centers are designed to encourage playful, educational interaction between adults and children, which promotes early literacy.
Reading Programs
Sharing a book with a child is the best way to encourage reading and the love of literacy. The Library of Virginia provides public libraries in Virginia with materials to host both a winter reading program for young children and a summer reading program for everyone.
