FEATURED LESSON PLAN: Virginians Respond Jennifer Zecher, of Park View High School in Sterling, one of the Library of Virginia's 2010 Brown Teacher Research Fellows, created this lesson plan using sources from a Web exhibition on Virginia Memory, Brown v. Board of Education: Virginia Responds. The plan uses ten citizen viewpoints concerning the desegregation of schools around Virginia as displayed in correspondence to the governor as well as two audio clips of Governor Thomas B. Stanley and Governor J. Lindsay Almond defending massive resistance strategies. There are full transcriptions . . . The 2nd Annual Anne and Ryland Brown Teacher Institute The 2nd Annual Anne and Ryland Brown Teacher Institute was held at the Library of Virginia June 28–30, 2011. The topic, "Union or Secession: Virginians Decide," corresponded with the exhibition of the same name at the Library. The educators that attended the institute learned about Virginia at the brink of the Civil War. . . 2011 African American Trailblazer Honored with a Highway Marker Henrietta Lacks, one of the Library of Virginia's 2011 African American Trailblazers, has been honored by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources with a state historical highway marker in the community of Clover in Halifax County, her childhood home. Lacks's cells, known in the medical world as HeLa cells, were the first human cells . . .	Upcoming Events Friday, September 16 In commemoration of Constitution Week the Library of Virginia will display one of the Commonwealth's treasures—Virginia's 1789 manuscript copy of the Bill of Rights. At noon there will be a reading of the Bill of Rights by a costumed town crier. Don't miss us at the Virginia Educational Media Association Annual Conference in Richmond, November 16–19. The Library of Virginia will host sessions and offer special tours during the conference. We're an easy, two-block walk from the conference hotel. Union or Secession: Virginians Decide is on display at the Library of Virginia until October 29, 2011. Don't miss this fascinating look into what Virginians were doing and saying during the secession crisis.
