Archives Week 2003 Web Exhibit

Archives Week, a celebration of archivists and archival repositories, acknowledges the programs, outreach, and cooperative projects of archival institutions and special collections nationwide. First celebrated across the Commonwealth in 2002, Archives Week events spotlight the process of gathering, preserving, and publicizing our collective history, and in turn fostering a sense of community and shared experience.

Archival professionals from diverse backgrounds offer programs, workshops, and publications to inform government officials and individuals about the care, preservation, and conservation of archival and manuscript materials. Responding to natural disasters and the ravages of time, archival institutions offer advice on the treatment of damaged and vulnerable records, helping to make them available for centuries to come.

The digital age has brought with it a number of challenges and advances for archivists and archives. The migration of information from one ever-changing format to another, the lifespan of different media, and the transfer and retention of electronic data are but some of the archival issues of the 21st century.
