This guide was originally created in 2007 to mark the the Jamestown landing's 400th anniversary. In commemoration of this event, scholars produced a number of well-researched books about Jamestown and colonial Virginia, many of which worked to update the distorted narratives of early European colonization popularized by earlier historians.

In 2019, the commemoration of the 1619 arrival of enslaved Africans to Virginia was marked with additional books that explore Jamestown's history through the lenses of race and colonialism.
