This guide provides an alphabetical list (by location) of Virginia city directories at the Library of Virginia. It includes print, microfilm, and microfiche formats.

Many cities and towns began publishing directories of their residents and businesses in the early to mid–nineteenth century. These included names, occupations, and street addresses. Over time, these publications began including cross-reference sections arranged by street address and telephone number. City directories often provide a general history of an area and its educational institutions, agriculture, and industry. Many include lists of local government officials and civic organizations. Although these directories usually focus on cities, information for smaller towns and counties that surround metropolitan areas is frequently included.

  • STACKS = closed stacks (not open to the public, but items can be requested)

Note: For preservation purposes, print volumes that are in poor condition are not served if available in other formats.
