A Checklist of Architectural Books in the Special Collections of the Library of Virginia

Compiled by Tom H. Ray
September 2001

Revised by Deanna Chavez
October 2009

Introduction

The following checklist of rare architectural titles held by the Library of Virginia was originally compiled as part of a research project directed by Dr. Charles Brownell, Professor of Art History, Virginia Commonwealth University. This is the first project to study a selected part of the Library of Virginia’s Special Collections. Titles will be added to the checklist as they are acquired by the library and as other holdings in the general collection continue to be evaluated.

The Library of Virginia was established by an act of the state legislature in 1823. The first printed catalog of the library collection was published five years later in 1828. There are no architecture books listed in the first catalog; however, three years later the second printed catalog lists [ten] architectural books. This project located [eight] of those original titles still in the collection. The library also owns sixteen titles that appear in E. Millicent Sowerby's Catalog of the Library of Thomas Jefferson. Most of the library's copies are the same edition that Jefferson owned. These two aspects of the collection help document the printed sources used by architects and builders in Virginia during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The earliest architectural books in the library collection were pattern books and builder's manuals. The collection is particularly rich in these types of books, as the checklist illustrates. The checklist will serve as a collection development tool as the library continues to build the collection of architectural materials. The checklist will also be a useful resource for research in either architectural bibliography or the history of the built environment in Virginia.
