Lahendro | Report Date: | 5/5/1999 | Location: | Mansion - Basement - General | Work Type: | Demolition | Notes: | Video of general demolition. New openings being created, especially in the north-south brick bearing wall between the stair halls and the ballrooms. While creating one opening in this wall, at the bottom of the north stairs, a prior brick seam has been discovered and exposed. It is along the south jamb of this new opening, and is identifiable by not only its formed brick end but also its being painted white. |

Note ID: | JL572 | Weather Conditions: | Sunny, mid-70's | Report Author: | Joseph D. Lahendro | Report Date: | 5/5/1999 | Location: | Mansion - Basement - Security Chief (E) / Office (R) | Work Type: | Demolition | Notes: | Video, digital photos and field sketches (plan and section) of masonry pit structure discovered below the demolished concrete slab. It appears to relate to an early twentieth century furnace pit or room due to the depression in the slab, the mortar hardness and the prior opening in the floor above which may have been a grill for ductless distribution of heat. |

Note ID: | JL574 | Weather Conditions: | Sunny, mid-70's | Report Author: | Joseph D. Lahendro | Report Date: | 5/5/1999 | Location: | Mansion - Basement - Women (R) | Work Type: | Demolition | Notes: | Video and digital photos of north end of west wall in area below the north ballroom, where an opening is being created in the brick bearing wall. Just like the east wall in the former women's toilet, this west has a later plaster wall with handsplit wood lath on furring strips applied to a finished plaster wall on the original brick. Applied to the brick plastered wall is wallpaper, matching that found in the former women's toilet. It appears that the area below the north ballroom was, at one time, one open room with wallpapered, plastered walls. Wallpaper shown to Cara Metz, VDHR. |

Note ID: | MS146 | Weather Conditions: | evening, mid-60's | Report Author: | Mary Harding Sadler | Report Date: | 5/6/1999 | Location: | Mansion - Basement - General | Work Type: | Excavation | Notes: | The slab in all spaces along the west (front) wall of the basement has been removed and preparations for installing underpinning are in full swing. Jack hammers are being used to loosen the clay mixed with river rock. Material being removed is clay with rock, brick fragments, and concrete fragments. Rob Bliley has been checking the spoils to make sure there is nothing of archaeological interest. He has seen nothing: no glass, no ceramic, no unusual rock, no bones, etc. |

Note ID: | MS150 | Weather Conditions: | evening, mid-60's | Report Author: | Mary Harding Sadler | Report Date: | 5/6/1999 | Location: | Mansion - Basement - Hall (E) / Stairhall (R) | Work Type: | Demolition | Notes: | Examined new masonry openings made in west wall of stairhall. Two of the openings had finished brick (painted, smooth-faced brick) sides suggesting locations of historic openings in that wall. The southernmost opening (into the Mansion Director's Office) appeared to have been a window prior to being enlarged as a door. An opening just north of the center of the wall appeared to be a narrow door opening. |
