Note ID: | MS62 | Weather Conditions: | mid-60's, partly cloudy | Report Author: | Mary Harding Sadler | Report Date: | 4/20/1999 | Location: | Site - General | Work Type: | Excavation | Notes: | Excavation at the east wall of Capitol Square, across from Aluminum Building. A five foot deep hole has been dug below the brick sidewalk on the west side of Governor's Street, to install a gas line serving the Mansion. The hole presents the following strata, from grade to the bottom of the trench: brick sidewalk, a 12" deep layer of sandy clay with small rounded rocks, a deep layer of larger, rounded rocks, then a broken terra cotta storm sewer running parallel to Governor's Street. The gas line is installed after a hole is created by a device called a "mole," a pointed metal shaft, pneumatically driven underground. The "mole"causes only minimal disturbance or soil removal. The "mole" is first activated in an uphill direction (up towards the Mansion) and then in a downhill direction (from the Mansion perimeter down to Governor's Street). |

Note ID: | MS77 | Weather Conditions: | sunny, lmid-60's | Report Author: | Mary Harding Sadler | Report Date: | 4/21/1999 | Location: | Mansion - First Floor - Ladies Parlor (E/R) | Work Type: | Floor Conservation | Notes: | In the Ladies Parlor I discussed floor repair in progress with Tidewater Preservation. One challenge in repairing the floor is that the hallway pieces tend to have a narrow section from tongue to top of floor, making it difficult to level the replacement flooring with existing flooring materials. |

Note ID: | MS65 | Weather Conditions: | sunny, lmid-60's | Report Author: | Mary Harding Sadler | Report Date: | 4/21/1999 | Location: | Site - General | Work Type: | Excavation | Notes: | Met Cara Metz and Rob Blily on side to make a preliminary determination of archaeological potential in the area of the new addition, the future service/elevator entry at lower level of the north side. Earth was mechanically removed first to a depth of 12" below grade, where Cara identified a layer of construction-related debris. She asked that that earth be removed to the level of 5'-6' below grade (the depth of the adjacent areaway), where undisturbed soil was reached. Cara did not observe any conditions that concerned her. Few artifacts were turned up: some asphalt, some stone, some brick, some window glass, and a Coke bottle fragment Cara felt that excavation could move forward with limited monitoring. |

Note ID: | MS83 | Weather Conditions: | sunny | Report Author: | Mary Harding Sadler | Report Date: | 4/23/1999 | Location: | Mansion - West Elevation | Work Type: | Miscellaneous | Notes: | Observed condition of stonework on the Mansion façade. Marble at entry portico is stained and eroded, particularly below the columns on the north side of the portico. Rust stains are concentrated where the handrail meets the steps. The stone water table, jack arches, and window sills have been painted with white paint, perhaps in an effort to conceal staining and patching, or to seal the stone from further spalling. |
