Surry County was named for the county of Surrey in England, and was formed for James City County about 1652. Its area is 306 square miles, and the county seat is Surry. The population is 6,829 according to the 2000 census. The deeds for 1835-1838 and order books for 1718-1741 have been lost and various other early record books are fragmentary.
Note: Deed Book 10 (1835–1838) is missing and order books for 1718–1741 and various other early volumes are fragmentary. Most loose records prior to 1806 are missing.
