Using the Primary Resources Associated with the African American Trailblazers in Virginia History Program
The Library of Virginia hopes that the 2010 African American Trailblazers in Virginia History program can be a part of your classroom curriculum. Each honoree’s page features a concise biography along with images and a related primary source document. These tools can help your students sharpen their analytical skills as they learn about and interpret the lives and contributions of each honoree.

Guiding Questions
We have developed resources to assist you in bringing our African American Trailblazers honorees to life for your students. On each Trailblazer's page, you will find a selection of questions drawn from the primary resources and the individual's biography. Use these guiding questions to lead discussions and activities in the classroom.

Don't Forget Next Year!
We want to partner with your class and let your students nominate an outstanding African American or woman from Virginia for the 2011 African American Trailblazers in Virginia History poster or the Virginia Women in History poster. We are offering an award to the school and teacher that submit a successful nomination for the 2011 programs. If your nominee is chosen, the nominating teacher will be eligible to win $250 toward school supplies, along with a complimentary three-volume set of the Dictionary of Virginia Biography (a $120 value) for the school library. The teacher will also be recognized at the 2011 Trailblazers or Women in History reception. Download a nomination form.
