To check out books from the Library, legislators (and their aides) must register for a Library card at the Circulation Desk. A photo-identification card with a current address, such as a driver’s license, must be presented in order to obtain a card. Legislators may check out books for the duration of the session.
Legislators receive free photocopies of Library materials.
During the session, the Library makes deliveries to the General Assembly mail room twice a day.
Library staff can help you search the federal databases available on the Internet and the subscription databases offered by the Library of Virginia. We can also provide in-depth, staff-mediated searches in subscription databases. For a complete list of subscription databases, please click on the “Using the Collections” link on the Library’s website: http://www.lva.virginia.gov. You are invited to call the Library’s Reference Services staff to request demonstrations of databases.

The Library of Virginia is the repository of original, permanent records from state agencies. The Archives staff can provide limited research in these records. Please call Archives Reference Services at 804-692-3888 for more information.

The Library of Virginia is actively seeking the personal papers of legislators. When you retire from office, please consider the Library as a repository for your official and personal papers. For more information, please call 804-692-3743 or 804-692-3795.
