Votes for Women - Images and Documents

In 1836 the Staunton city council held a referendum to learn whether the city's taxpayers would approve of raising taxes to pay for installation of a city water supply system. Although women could not legally vote in Virginia then, many women owned property and paid taxes, and the city allowed them to register their opinions on the plan. Their names appear as "proxies" on the poll list for the referendum.
