The Western State Hospital Experience
Formerly a hospital campus for the mentally ill composed of several buildings once included on the National Register for Historic Places, Western State has a very colorful history. Guests will enjoy a 60-minute visual presentation about the history of Western State, delivered by historian, author, and photographer John Plashal. This presentation will take place in the penthouse suite of the Lofts Building, which once served as a prison. The talk will be followed by a walking tour of the immediate area, which includes the cemetery, the exteriors of several of the abandoned buildings, and the recently renovated Administration Building, which is now Staunton's most picturesque hotel, the Blackburn Inn.
This unique program is brought to you by John Plashal Photo in partnership with the Library of Virginia. For more information, contact John Plashal at email@example.com.
