During the American Civil War (1861–1865), more soldiers fought and died in Virginia than in any other state. By January 1864, more than 153,000 Virginians had served in the state’s Confederate military forces. Thousands more Virginians served in Union military forces. The commonwealth was permanently divided by the creation of the state of West Virginia in 1863.

Through a variety of written records, researchers may trace the stories of Confederate and Union soldiers, enslaved and free African Americans who were impressed into Confederate service, and individuals who received pensions or other support due to a family member's Civil War service.
