Literary Awards Finalists & Lineup Announced

Nine authors are finalists for the Library of Virginia’s 24th Annual Library of Virginia Literary Awards. The finalists were chosen by an independent panel of judges from more than 110 books nominated for the awards. The awards will be held virtually again this year with a week of author conversations and special events, most free, beginning Tuesday, October 12, 2021. The winner in each category will be selected from among these finalists and announced during a virtual celebration at the Library of Virginia on Saturday, October 16, 2021. Award-winning Virginia author Adriana Trigiani will again serve as host for the evening. Tune in via the Library’s Facebook and YouTube pages to join the festivities.

Columbia Pike: Through the Lens of Community Exhibition Now Open

The Library’s new photography exhibition explores an Arlington community so diverse that it’s been described as a “World in a Zip Code.” Columbia Pike originated in the 19th century as a toll road connecting rural Virginia with the nation's capital. Today, the corridor is one of the most culturally diverse communities in the nation. Unlike in many other parts of the country or the world, however, the stunningly diverse group of people—representing every continent—who live and work there do so in relative harmony. More than 70 of the thousands of Columbia Pike Documentary Project photographs transferred to our collections this spring are highlighted in Columbia Pike: Through the Lens of Community on view in the Exhibition Gallery through January 8, 2022. Make plans to visit soon!

Don’t Miss the Next Weinstein Author Talk on September 14

Please join us in person in the Library's Lecture Hall on Tuesday, September 14 at 6:00 PM for a free Carole Weinstein Author Series talk by author and historian Dr. Karen L. Cox on her book No Common Ground: Confederate Monuments and the Ongoing Fight for Racial Justice. Please note this talk will not be available online. In this eye-opening narrative of the efforts to raise, preserve, protest, and remove Confederate monuments, Dr. Cox depicts what these statues meant to those who erected them and how a movement arose to force a reckoning. The Carole Weinstein Author Series supports the literary arts by bringing both new and well-known authors to the Library of Virginia through online or in-person events. This book is available online from the Virginia Shop. For more information, contact Dawn Greggs at 804.692.3813 or dawn.greggs@lva.virginia.gov.
