Celebrate Women’s History Month with “A Woman’s Place is in the House…of Delegates”

Help the Library of Virginia celebrate a century of women in the House! Since 1923, 109 women have served in the House of Delegates, with a record number of 37 women in 2023. Join us on Wednesday, March 29 at 6:00 p.m. as a group of House members discusses the challenges, opportunities and changes they have experienced in Capitol Square. This event is part of the Library's 200th anniversary celebration. Find more anniversary activities here.

Jennifer L. Lawless, Commonwealth Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia, will moderate the discussion with Delegate Betsy B. Carr, a member since 2010 who has been recognized for her legislative service by many professional and community organizations; Delegate Carrie E. Coyner, a member since 2020 who has served on numerous community boards; Delegate Charniele L. Herring, a member since 2009 and the first woman and the first African American to serve as majority leader of the House of Delegates; and Delegate Vivian E. Watts, a member since 1996 (and previously 1982–1985) and currently the longest-serving female member of the House.
