Library of Virginia Presents: Electronic Records Town Hall

In observance of April as Records Management Month, the LVA held a Virtual Town Hall focused on electronic records and electronic recordkeeping.

Guest Speaker: Mark J. Myers, Texas State Library and Archives Commission

Mark J. Myers is the senior electronic records specialist with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) and has over 24 years of experience in electronic records management and digital preservation. Mark is one of the administrators of the Texas Digital Archive which preserves and makes accessible the electronic records of Texas state government. Mark also provides advice and assistance to state and local government agencies for the long-term preservation of their electronic records. Prior to his work in TX, Mark was the electronic records archivist with the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives from 2001-2014, and an electronic records archivist with the Alabama Department of Archives and History from 1999-2001. Mark was also an instructor for the Society of American Archivists teaching workshops on “Appraisal of Digital Records” and “Basic Digital Records.” Mark has a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of Kentucky and graduate work from Auburn University. He now lives in Austin, TX.

Mark will discuss the power and the pitfalls of electronic records management, particularly the temptation to treat electronic records as somehow different than their hard copy counterparts.

Speaker: Chad Owen, Library of Virginia

Chad Owen has headed the Records Management Section at the Library of Virginia since 2016 and has been Deputy SHRAB Coordinator since 2020. Previously he spent four years at the Iowa State Archives and fourteen years as records manager for the University of Louisville. He's originally from southside Virginia, holds degrees in history from UVA and VCU, and spends his spare time leathercrafting, playing bass, and trying to convince himself that he's retired from rugby.

Chad will discuss the Library of Virginia's updated Electronic Records Guidelines and will open the floor for questions.
