Attempting to find method for removing stains on oak strip parquet flooring throughout first floor. Tidewater Preservation is responsible for refinishing historic floors. Conservators do not want to aggressively sand the floors. Method being tested is as follows: 1) apply mineral spirits and tolulene to clean off grim and dirt, using steelwool for removing paint splatters and especially stained areas, 2) apply oxalic acid to remove stains from wood, repeat steps for especially bad areas, 3) after thoroughly dried, apply shellac protective coating, 4) apply two coats of wax, buffing after each application. Completed test area will be reviewed by owner, architect, contractor and conservators tomorrow for approval of method.
