Note ID: | JL526 | Weather Conditions: | Sunny, mid 60's | Report Author: | Joseph D. Lahendro | Report Date: | 4/14/1999 | Location: | Carriage House - Lower Floor (east to west) - Room 3 | Work Type: | Excavation | Notes: | Video and digital photos of historic underground brick lined sewer trench about 2' below grade, and about 6' from south wall. Early sewer was exposed by trenching for new electrical lines. Sewer is roughly 20" square box formed of mortared brick sides and bottom, and covered with flat stones. New trench also exposed some rubble fill below a modern utility line just inside south door. Rubble included broken bricks and broken sections of flat, 1" thick glass of unknown origin. |

Note ID: | JL524 | Weather Conditions: | Sunny, mid 60's | Report Author: | Joseph D. Lahendro | Report Date: | 4/14/1999 | Location: | Mansion - First Floor - Old Governor's Office (E/R) | Work Type: | Mantel Conservation | Notes: | Video and digital photos of historic mantle removal. Documented back of mantle and exposed face of chimney breast formerly covered by mantle. Mantle anchored by modern steel bolts and wire nails. Backside of mantle shows wood pegged joints connecting three wood boards that form mantle's base, along with many nails whose exposed heads appear to be handwrought. At back of mantle's top shelf, and along outside of both side boards, there are modern wood filler strips. On face of chimney breast there are outlines of at least three mantles--a plaster outline of a first mantle that was much shorter and narrower (two narrow strips of sheet metal set in brick wall at each top corner within this first mantle outline may be anchoring devices for this mantle); a second mantle that was a little smaller than present mantle is outlined by wallpaper that extends behind present mantle; and present mantle. There are gas lines cut into brick wall and patched over with plaster outside the outline of mantle one, but behind mantle two. Plaster for mantle one stops in line with top of wainscot. |
