Virginia Newspaper Directory

The Virginia Newspaper Program, originally called the Virginia Newspaper Project, began as a part of United States Newspaper Program, a national effort to locate, describe, inventory, preserve, and provide public access to the United States imprint newspapers housed in the Commonwealth.

The Virginia Newspaper Program is sponsored by and headquartered at the Library of Virginia. Using grant funds made available through the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Virginia Newspaper Program was established at the Library of Virginia in 1993. The University of Virginia, the College of William and Mary, and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture have served as co-sponsors.

The Virginia Newspaper Directory is a resource created by the Virginia Newspaper Program and includes bibliographic and holdings records for historical newspapers held not only by the Library of Virginia, but also by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Mount Vernon Library, Omohundro Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, Virginia Tech, Virginia Union University, the Union Theological Seminary, the University of Richmond, the University of Virginia, and William and Mary. For current newspaper titles, please search the main catalog for the most up to date holdings information.
