Imprint Record

Education.

  • Imprint Number: 1798.031
  • Title: Education.
  • Sequence Number: 31
  • Year: 1798
  • Place Issued: Virginia
  • Issuing Press: Uncertain
  • Author: Girardin, Louis Hue (1771-1825).
  • Notes: Circular letter – signed in print: "L.H. Girardin. Dumfries, July, 21st, 1798" – seeking students for a school at Dumfries offering instruction in the liberal arts, particularly languages. This was the first of several such schools that the French refugee conducted in Virginia. Girardin was later editor of the first successful daily in Virginia, the Richmond Complier (1815-16).
Title lacks printer credit; Evans suggested a Richmond press as place of origin; yet the closer proximity of Dumfries to Alexandria and Girardin's stated efforts to establish a school near that port indicates that this imprint probably issued from Alexandria; however, a definitive attribution to either locale is unfeasible without other external evidence.
