What can I do with a card?

Note: you do not need a library card to access our digital collections. For questions about researching with our collections, please ask us!

Virginia residents can

• Access select subscription databases from home
• Borrow circulating books and journals from our Richmond location

On-Site visitors can

• Request books and journals from the closed stacks
• Use materials in the Archives Research Room and Special Collections
• Pay for prints and photocopies

Register Online

Virginia residents may register online for a Library of Virginia account with a valid Virginia state-issued driver's license or identification card.

An online account provides you with immediate remote access to Library of Virginia subscription databases. Log in with your email address and the password you create.

To register for an account, complete the form below. Once we receive your application, we will validate your address and identification number against Virginia's DMV database to confirm Virginia residency. Submission of false or faulty information will result in suspension of privileges.

To receive your physical card, visit us in person. Please bring a valid photo ID and proof of current physical address.

Register in Person

To register in person for a library card, please bring a valid photo ID and proof of your current physical address.

Visitors age 16 or 17 can register for a library card if a parent or guardian is present. The parent/guardian must present valid photo identification and proof of current physical address and complete a parent consent form. Younger researchers are welcome to visit our reading rooms long as they are accompanied by a parent, teacher, or guardian with a valid Library of Virginia card.

If you are a Virginia resident, you may pre-register online. To receive your physical card, please bring your photo ID and proof of physical address when you visit.

Renew Your Account

Your card must be renewed every year to keep your account active.

Virginia residents may renew their account by completing the form below. Enter the name and email address on file with your account, as well as a valid Virginia state-issued driver's license or identification card. When you next visit in person, please bring a valid photo ID and proof of current physical address.
