• Notes: Circular from Clopton seeking reelection to the U.S. Congress; he served continuously there from the 4th Congress (1795-96) until his death at the end of the 14th Congress (1815-16).
  Sheet lacks colophon. Although signed "New Kent," where he owned a plantation at Tunstall, this letter is undoubtedly a Richmond imprint; Clopton was part of the Republican leadership circle there, and his congressional district encompassed the city of Richmond; moreover, no press was in operation in New Kent at this time. The press he employed was probably that of Samuel Pleasants, then the primary job printer in Richmond, and a key part of the Republican leadership himself; however, the possibility that this issued from the press of Meriwether Jones, the Republican public printer, cannot be excluded, so the indeterminacy here.
