  • Notes: Title page lacks authorial credit; Prentiss later admitted to writing this verse satire; first part [p.3-12] consists of his original stanzas with marginal notations; the notes refer to passages in work of Horace cited, which are reproduced and translated in the second part [p.12-14].
    This text was originally published in the Virginia Patriot of Augustine Davis in Richmond (as header on p. 2 indicates); Prentiss was then acting as a reporter of the debates in Congress for several Federalist journals, but had worked previously as editor of the Patriot for Davis (1805), and would again after the War of 1812 (1816-17), before retiring to Massachusetts.
