- Notes: An Irish Protestant attorney, Sampson was partner to John Philip Curran as defending several United Irishmen charged with sedition and treason before he was forced into exile as well, landing in New York City in 1806; in the United States, he was a pivotal figure in defending Catholic priests from forced testimony in court about matters learned in the confessional.
