Library of Virginia Presents a Free Educator Workshop & Open House on Aug. 1
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA – The Library of Virginia will present a free educator workshop and open house on Friday, Aug. 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to share information about its collections and resources, with an emphasis on primary sources, and how teachers can use them in the classroom. Registration is required at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/educator-workshop-open-house-tickets-1481141657569?aff=oddtdtcreator.
The resources include Document Bank of Virginia, which features historical sources searchable by era or theme, Virginia Changemakers, a set of online biographies of men and women who have changed Virginia’s history, and more.
Attendees will also tour the Library’s new exhibition on the history of Richmond's Jackson Ward neighborhood, “House to Highway: Reclaiming a Community History,” which opened on July 14. The exhibition explores the historic district that was once the center of Richmond’s Black community through the lens of the Skipwith-Roper family.
The events conclude with a conversation between educator Dr. Emma Violand-Sánchez and writer David Bearinger on their new book, “Dreams and Shadows: An Immigrant’s Journey.” Violand-Sánchez, who immigrated to Virginia from Bolivia in 1961, has become a transformative figure in American public education and in service to immigrants and refugees. Bearinger, an independent public humanities consultant and writer, retired as the senior director of Grants and Global Virginia Programs at Virginia Humanities. A book signing will follow the discussion.
