  Porter left only a fleeting presence in the Virginia print trade, recorded in a notice placed in the Alexandria Gazette of Samuel Snowden and John D. Simms, one evidently intended to warn future employers of his unreliability:
  One Cent Reward
  Gustavus Reed Porter, an apprentice to the printing business, absconded from the Office of the Alexandria Gazette some time about the last of May or 1st of June. – He is about 15 years of age. His cloathing cannot be described, as he has changed it several times since he left. The above reward but no charges will be paid for apprehending and delivering him to Snowden & Simms.
