  In early December 1860, Page advertised in the Richmond Whig for a partner to assist him in the Intelligencer, indicating Bolling's retirement from partnership; Page instead sold the daily to Shell, a young Dinwiddie County lawyer, effective Monday February 11, 1861; as Shell enlisted in the Virginia Militia in May of that year, after the secession ordinance, it is likely that the Intelligencer finally ceased publication at about that time.
