The Virginia Monitor
- ID: 395
- End Date: after August 13, 1823
- Frequency: Weekly
- Lineage ID: 0
- Proprietors: Nathaniel Mitchell
- Start Date: ca. October 23, 1822
- Variant Number: Shepherdstown 06-02
- Notes: Only three issues of this variant (June 4, July 16, and August 6, 1823) were found by the U.S. Newspaper Project, so LC catalogue entry notes October 23, 1822 as date publication was started, calculated from the earliest issue; but date actually marks the start of new volume numbering scheme, probably the date of the first number issued by Mitchell as its sole proprietor; he apparently joined office shortly before death of Samuel Bell, brother & foreman to proprietor Edward Bell, as Norona & Shetler record Mitchell as paper's editor of the September 20, 1821 issue, three days before Bell died. Latest number known extant is that for August 13, 1823, hence paper expired sometime after that date; Mitchell family histories indicate the printer continued offering this paper well into 1824; Mitchell started publication of another weekly in Chestertown, Maryland, on October 21, 1824, meaning that he ceased publishing this Shepherdstown paper well before that date.
