The Western Star

  • ID: 448
  • End Date: sometime in 1822
  • Frequency: Weekly
  • Lineage ID: 106
  • Proprietors: Gideon Butler
  • Start Date: Possibly late in 1820
  • Variant Number: Weston 01-01
  • Notes: No surviving copy known or any reference to title found in other papers. Norona & Shetler include title in their bibliography based on manuscript notes on West Virginia newspapers compiled by Donovan H. Bond, formerly director of the West Virginia University School of Journalism; Bond suggested Butler had relocated his press to Weston after he had closed his Republican Compiler in Clarksburg in July 1820, and began publishing a weekly there by year's end; Bond also reported its cessation came in 1822 as a result of the office being destroyed in a fire. Existence of this paper is known from Butler's colophon in several imprints issued from his press in 1821, but those items do not confirm publication of this paper during 1820, making the start date above conjectural. Title is included in this Index in accordance with Norona & Shetler record, even as this compiler considers the Western Star as a doubtful pre-1821 title.
