Virginia Newspaper Directory

The Virginia Newspaper Directory includes bibliographic and holdings records for historical newspapers held by the Library of Virginia (LVA) and Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Mount Vernon Library, Omohundro Institute, Union Theological Seminary, University of Richmond, University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia Museum of History and Culture, Virginia Tech, Virginia Union University, and William and Mary.

Holdings records may point to original newspapers, microfilmed newspapers, and digitized newspapers. Digitized newspapers may be available on Virginia Chronicle or subscription databases, such as ProQuest, NewsBank, and Newspapers.com. Subscription databases are not linked in these records and should be searched separately.

The Virginia Newspaper Directory was created in the 1990s. The holdings records for institutions outside of the Library of Virginia have not been updated since the early 2000s. For newspapers not at LVA, please refer to the institution’s catalog to verify and access them. If you need help deciphering holdings records, a reference librarian can assist you.

The Virginia Newspaper Program (VNP) works to locate, describe, inventory, preserve, and provide access to Virginia newspapers housed not only at the Library of Virginia but throughout the commonwealth. VNP is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute for Museum and Library Services.
